What is the Purpose of an Intranet?

The purpose of an Intranet started out strictly as document storage. Over time, and with the onset of the age of digital transformation, Intranet’s have taken on various functions and uses within a business.
Just how many purposes does an Intranet have? Here are 6.

The original use for Intranets was, as mentioned above, for document storage. And that remains a significant function today. They communicate the branding of a company and provide access to initiatives, policies, values , etc. Organizations are able to reinforce their values and strategies, making sure that users are productive about the right things. Some companies even name their Intranet to really align it with company culture. Intranets also allow for the opportunity of community building with things like birthday announcements, employee recognition and event promotion.

6. Digital workplace

The last purpose of an Intranet we’ll discuss today, combines all of the last 5 elements to create a digital workplace. According to The Social Business Manifesto, organizations are increasingly integrating their Intranets with their external portals and using the result to talk and interact with partners and clients. They go on to say that digital workplaces are being utilized in such a way as to provide private and open coexisting environments that, with the help of social applications, “extend the company’s capability of communication and value creation.” Digital workplaces grant users the freedom and flexibility to work remotely. With more of the workforce heading in that direction a centralized hub accessible to users regardless to where they are is becoming increasingly important.
